Mental & Physical Healing Information

History

The style of yoga taught at YOGA WITH HELENA is "Bikram". Bikram Yoga was started in the 1970s in India, and influenced by the "Human Potential Movement". Indeed, with wide-ranging health benefits, it is no wonder Bikram gained international acclaim quickly, with hundreds of studios in dozens of countries.

Healing Potential

According to Wikipedia, "a systematic review in 2015 found that Bikram Yoga improved lower body strength, range of joint motion in both upper and lower body, and balance. It noted that unsystematic trials (without randomized controls) had found possible improvements in glucose tolerance, bone density, blood lipids, artery stiffness, mindfulness, and "perceived stress". Yoga may even be covered by insurance if your doctor prescribes a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

Class Description

A typical Bikram class consists of the same 26 postures, which includes breathing exercises. Most classes on the YWH schedule are the traditional 90 minutes except the 6am slot (or for an extenuating circumstance), condensed to ~65 (not uncommon in the western world). The sequence always starts standing and the entire second half of the class takes place on the floor, with corpse pose (laying down) in between each pose, ironically the most difficult of all.
Practitioners may prefer Bikram over other styles because they know what to expect and don't have to listen for each new instruction or look up to watch the teacher's each and every move; also, students are better able to track and assess their progress.

Environment

The heated room loosens the muscles for improved and safer mobility, and the mirrors allow you to focus on just yourself (easier said than done!). Those with injuries are encouraged to participate, first sharing their limitations with the instructor; they may consider taking a private to learn the modifications to support and even aid in healing. The possibilities are infinite, though YOGA WITH HELENA does not claim to be a medical remedy or cure by any means. This does not mean that other styles or cross-training in other sports is frowned upon!

Who should practice Bikram?

Students include swimmers, marathoners, and competitive martial artists to those who are just trying yoga or exercise for the very first time. Even the most advanced student athlete is happy to have a new practitioner to join this incredible movement! Anyone and everyone can practice Bikram! Students range from adolescent to 70s+ of all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life; both male and female have surprised themselves over the years with what they learn they are capable, or their barriers needed to overcome of as a result of this practice. Wouldn't you love to find out for yourself?

Feedback From Practitioners

I've been going to Yoga with Helena regularly for almost 4 years now, and it has been life changing! Helena is an amazing instructor - passionate, kind, patient, and encouraging. Her sister Mira is also an excellent instructor. Helena's hot yoga class has helped me strengthen, heal injuries, prevent injuries, detoxify and relax, and has done wonders for my spinal health. As a Physical Therapist I regularly recommend her class to my patients. It's become such a priority in my life that I will continue to be a lifelong loyal customer! Take a class - you won't regret it!!

I have been to Bikram studio's all over the world and they were all wonderful but Helena's style and dialogue is unmatched. I feel blessed to have Yoga with Helena in my backyard.

I absolutely LOVE practicing at this studio! Helena is an amazing instructor. Her passionate and inspiring disposition helped me to find my inner strength and power. She is very knowledgeable and takes the time to look at each student and ensure they are moving in the right direction for each pose during class. Helena's has created an environment where her studio is a home away from home, someplace I can go to nourish both my body and soul. I could not possibly express in words the gratitude I have for Helena and her studio.

First time?

Hear from strangers who became students and friends, from hurt to healed. Everyone was a first timer once, think about it! Why not give it a try today?

What to bring, wear, and how to prepare physically and mentally.

  • Drink a good amount of water before class, but do not eat for ideally 3 hours prior: yoga should only be done on a empty stomach. If you must snack, make it something light such as a piece of fruit. Fatty, oily food may make you feel nauseous, while sweets will make you feel shaky or dizzy.

  • Bring a water bottle for class time, which will be instructed to consume at the best times. Of course, replenish lost electrolytes for the entire day following the session.

  • Bring a mat with a bath-size towel (that covers the mat) and possibly a face towel. You will sweat!

  • Appropriate clothing includes stretch "yoga pants", exercise shorts. A sports bra is acceptable.

  • There are showers (and soaps)! Feel free to bring another towel and change of clothes. There are plenty of private changing spaces and 2 large restrooms.

  • Follow directions exactly to not hurt yourself. Go into postures slowly; breathe normally while in the posture... Remember that this yoga is powerful- and challenging- so pace yourself, don't force yourself, and don't expect to be perfect overnight! It's the instructor's job to push you to achieve your best, and your responsibility to know what is enough for your body on any given day. Progress is a slow, sure, but also enjoyable process! Your improvement will depend entirely on the time and effort you put in. Respect your limits (without babying yourself), but also expect those limits to change. Just do your best. The harder this yoga is for you the more you need to do it and the more you are going to get out of it. There is no need to show off, and there is also no need to be embarrassed about your level of practice. Bikram says: "Never too late, never too old, never too bad, and never too sick to do yoga and start from scratch once again!" And remember, all the hard work pays off. This yoga works! The time and effort you put into this yoga will return to you tenfold. It's the very best thing you can do for your health, your figure, your vitality, and your sense of well-being.

I was skeptical at first when my wife recommended that I should try it. I am glad she did. This yoga is very intense and I have never felt better and I am now going a few days a week. Both Helena and Teresa have been very helpful.
